It was another tough day for Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan Tsz-ching at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Kawagoe City on Thursday as the city’s number one player struggled to a three-over-par 74 to move to nine-over for the tournament. The round that saw her remain tied for 58th in the 60-strong field included five bogeys and two birdies and all but ended any faint hopes she might have had of a medal push at Tokyo 2020 . It was a three-shot improvement on her opening round, but the deficit to USA’s Nelly Korda at the top of the leader board grew to 22 strokes, on a fantastic day for the 23-year-old Florida native. Korda came close to equalling the course record at the sweltering hot Kasumigaseki Country Club, which was set last week by Slovakia’s Rory Sabbatini, as she signed for a hugely impressive nine-under par 62. Chan, who went into the Games with men’s gold medal winner Xander Schauffele’s caddie’s yardage book , will hope for a better showing on Friday. “I definitely have a lot more to improve as far as my game plan goes. And like, how I handle my mental side out there,” she told AFP. “Golf is a little hard to get from 6-over to, you know, shooting 6-under the next day. Hopefully I can reset tonight and then let go of whatever happened in the last few days and then play well.” On being told that Hong Kong had won their fourth medal at the Games thanks to a bronze in women’s team table tennis, Chan said: “Oh wow! That’s good news. Being able to compete in the Olympics and being able to stand on the podium, it’s just simply amazing.”
