Hong Kong’s Olympic champion Edgar Cheung says life is the same despite gold medal
- Cheung won Hong Kong’s second Olympic gold in Tokyo this summer, with first Asian Games gold the next target
- ‘The only difference is more people recognise me when I walk on the streets and they ask to take photos’

Golden boy Edgar Cheung Ka-long has not seen any big changes in his life despite being crowned the first Olympic champion for Hong Kong in 25 years in Tokyo this summer.
Returning from China in September after an unexpected knee injury forced him to pull out of the National Games, the fencer said it has been “business as usual” as he resumed training at the Sports Institute.
“I don’t think there is change in my life as an Olympic champion,” said the 24-year-old, who is now preparing the new season with the first World Cup series in Dubai in December.
“I still train in the same fencing hall and chat to my teammates as usual. Even when I returned home from Shenzhen after the injury, my parents did now show any big excitement on my Olympic victory. We only had a meal to celebrate and that is it.

“Perhaps the only difference is more people recognise me when I walk on the streets and they ask to take photos with me. Other than that, everything remain the same.”
