Hong Kong’s top badminton player Angus Ng Ka-long was dumped out of the Denmark Open by teammate Lee Cheuk-yiu in the round of 16 on Thursday.

World No 17 Lee triumphed 2-1 (21-16, 18-21, 21-8) after 61 minutes in Odense, where he will next face Taiwan’s world No 4 Chou Tien-chen for a place in the semi-finals.

The tournament had marked Ng’s return to the court following his disappointing run at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where he was seeded eighth but failed to get out of the pool stage.

It was a first victory for Lee against the world No 9, whom he lost to in the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open in January, where Ng finished as runner-up after losing to Viktor Axelsen in the final.

The 27-year-old Ng was in a positive mood despite his defeat, posting on Instagram from his hotel.

“Today Lee played better than me and deserved the victory, but there are five more tournaments and I cannot relax,” he wrote.
