The pair sealed their second appearance in the lucrative year-end event despite losing to Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino in the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Open in Bali on Friday. By reaching the last eight, they have secured sufficient points to be eligible for the finals.

The Hong Kong pair, who beat the same Japanese team in the Indonesian Masters last week, went out in straight games 21-17, 21-8.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, only a limited number of tournaments have been held over the past year with countries applying various health control measures and travel restrictions.

Hong Kong players skipped two tournaments in Europe in March, including the All England Open, because of health concerns when the new season kicked off. They did not start their first event until the World Tour resumed in October.
