Short track speed skater Sidney Chu said the success of Hong Kong’s Olympians at last year’s Tokyo Games will add to the pressure when he represents the city at Beijing 2022 next month.

The three-strong contingent of Chu and skiers Audrey King and Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen will be Hong Kong’s biggest at the Winter Games since their debut at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

The speed skater will be one of the 32 athletes in the men’s 500 metres in Beijing and although Hong Kong athletes are generally expected to fail at winter sports, Chu said expectations may be different this time.

“Our Hong Kong athletes did so well in Tokyo last summer, with a lot of people cheering for them in front of the television and of course they will be looking for similar things in Beijing this time,” said Chu, who missed the 2018 Pyeongchang Games because of a leg injury.

“I am probably among the lowest ranked of these 32 skaters in terms of explosive power but strategies and tactics are also important in short-track speedskating. If I can deliver the right thing in the right time, there may be some surprises.”

Hong Kong won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals at Tokyo 2020, their best performance at an Olympic Games.
