Profile | Winter Olympics: Hong Kong’s Sidney Chu prepares for ‘explosive’ start against Wu Dajing, the reigning short-track speedskating champion
- The 22-year-old outlines ‘very difficult race’ and ‘disadvantageous’ start position with Chinese world record-holder Wu
- ‘The races have been fantastic to watch so far and I hope audiences from Hong Kong have felt the excitement of short-track,’ Chu says

Short-track speed skater Sidney Chu is hours away from making his Winter Olympic debut in the men’s 500m event – and who better to race against than China’s world record-holder Wu Dajing?
Joining the pair is Italy’s 2021 world championship bronze medallist and Beijing mixed team relay silver medallist Pietro Sighel, and Dutch-Surinamese European championship silver medallist Dylan Hoogerwerf.

“It’s gonna be a very difficult race,” said Chu, who jokingly posted a photo of the line-up to social media with the caption “oh my god racing with the literal WR holder tomorrow”.
“I’ll be in fourth position so it’ll be disadvantageous at the start. And I’ll be racing Wu Dajing, the reigning Olympic champion and world record-holder.
“I’ve been focusing on perfecting my start and explosiveness on the ice. Working on my confidence on the starting line and other mental preparations.”
