Hong Kong’s Winter Olympic delegation will not attend the closing ceremony in Beijing on Sunday night, the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee (SF&OC) said. Its record-breaking three athletes – short-track speed skater Sidney Chu, and Alpine skiers Audrey King and Adrian Yung Hau-tsuen – alongside coaches and remaining representatives have already left the “closed-loop bubble” Beijing 2022 organisers created over Covid-19 concerns. “As the three athletes from the Hong Kong, China delegation for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games have completed all competitions, they left the Olympic Village early to continue their training and preparations for future competitions, and will not be attending the closing ceremony on the night of [February] 20th,” the SF&OC said in a statement. “The three athletes who took part in this Games are still young and did their best in each of their competitions, which is a hugely valuable experience for them. “We believe they will henceforth be able to reach even higher and farther in the international sports arena in the future, and hope the public continues to support them all.” The 22-year-old Chu, who was the only athlete of the local trio to complete his respective event, was the flag-bearer at the opening ceremony more than two weeks ago. King and Yung were unable to attend because of the former’s positive Covid-19 test upon arrival in the city, with the pair and head coach Marko Rudic forced into hotel isolation. Chu told the Post he will remain in the mainland for training but required mandatory quarantine before entering the non-bubble community. After his opening ceremony duties, Chu had rued the “missed opportunity” to promote local winter sports after only four delegates were allowed to parade at the National Stadium. Hong Kong Winter Olympics chef de mission Karl Kwok Chi-leung explained there were already “limits” and “strict regulations” in place by the International Olympic Committee for all National Olympic Committees. Subject to Covid-19-related restrictions, Yung and King will be eyeing an outing at the Asian Alpine Ski Championships in Lebanon starting on Wednesday.
