Hong Kong gymnast Shek Wai-hung has recovered from Covid-19 and is in Doha preparing for the third leg of the World Cup in Cairo next week. The 30-year-old was competing in the first leg of the series in Cottbus, Germany last month when he tested positive for the coronavirus, cutting short an event he appeared to do well in. Shek had finished third in the preliminary round after two displays of his “Ri Se-gwang” routine, qualifying for the final on February 27, but his positive test not only forced him out of the German event, but also last week’s one in Doha. Hong Kong’s Shek out of second World Cup event after positive Covid-19 test Sergiy Agafontsev, Hong Kong men’s team coach, said the gymnast, who has is fully vaccinated and has already had a booster shot, tested negative twice while in isolation and was allowed out on Monday. “Shek was isolated in the hotel for nine days without any training, so we flew to Doha the same day he got a negative result,” Agafontsev said. Agafontsev said Shek, plus teammates Ng Ka-ki, and Angel Wong Hiu-ying, who won a bronze medal in Doha last week, would remain in Qatar for a few days before flying to Cairo on March 15. Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Artur Davtyan from Armenia is one to watch in the coming World Cup. He claimed gold in Cottbus and Doha, while the 19-year-old Youth Olympics Games silver medallist Nazar Chepurnyi, from Ukraine, took two silver.
