Olympic bronze medallist Doo Hoi-kem eyeing four medals in Chengdu as warm up for Hangzhou Asian Games
- Doo, who led the Hong Kong women’s team to bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, will head to Chengdu for the University Games, a warm up to Asian Games later this year
- Doo, currently the world No 8 says she hopes to medal in four separate events, including singles and mixed doubles
Olympic table tennis bronze medallist Doo Hoi-kem hopes her once-in-a-lifetime World University Games experience in June can lay the groundwork for her Asian Games campaign later this year.
The University Games, which are held every two years, usually have an age limit of 18 to 25, though it has been extended to 26 this year in Chengdu because of the event’s one-year deferral owing to the pandemic.
“I put it like the Youth Olympics I took in 2014 – just once in a lifetime,” 25-year-old Doo said. “I will value this golden chance, go for the medals and enjoy it.”
Doo claimed a silver medal in the girls’ singles and a bronze in the mixed team at the 2014 Youth Olympics, she hopes to finish strong in her first and last University Games.
“I won’t have any Olympic burden with me in the University Games, I have already set the Olympic bronze aside. So glad for this University Games as a warm-up for the Asian Games, which is just two months away.”
Doo, who led Hong Kong’s women’s team to win a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, is a second-year Bachelor of Health Education student at the Education University of Hong Kong.
