Hong Kong badminton star Tse Ying-suet has tested positive for Covid-19, forcing her to miss the Indonesia Open which began on Tuesday. The Olympics mixed doubles player, who was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta last week, got the result on Monday after getting tested because she felt run down. In a Facebook post, Tse said she had experienced a sore throat, slight fever and sore muscles following her and partner Tang Chun-man’s 21-15, 21-10 loss to French pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue. “I had a sore throat after the quarter-finals, with a low fever and sore muscles, and finally tested positive,” Tse wrote, adding she planned to be back stronger than ever at the Malaysia Open later this month. “I felt so sorry for my partner Tang Chun-man, we’ve been training so hard the last half year, I will get well soon and have a good fight in Malaysia,” she said. While Tse and Tang are missing the competition in Jakarta, compatriots Chang Tak-ching and Ng Wing-yung made a winning start their mixed doubles campaign, beating India’s Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Castro 21-14, 21-11. Hong Kong No 1 Angus Ng Ka-long is also in action and will take on the host nation’s Shesar Hiren Rhustavito in the first round of the men’s singles on Wednesday, while teammate Lee Cheuk-yiu takes on Daren Liew of Malaysia. Hong Kong badminton squad return for 2022 Indonesia Masters Elsewhere, members of the Hong Kong badminton squad have been playing in Europe in a bid to improve their rankings, while also getting in some much-needed game time ahead of next month’s Super 500 Singapore Open. And they have been doing it in some style, with women’s doubles pair Lianne Yeung Nga-ting and Yeung Pui-lam winning three golds, one silver, and one bronze, with the most recent gold coming at the Denmark Masters on Sunday, where they defeated the Singapore duo Jin Yujia and Crystal Wong Jia Ying 21-12, 21-17. Now ranked 69 in the world, the pair will join the city’s elite players in Singapore, where they will compete in the qualifying round for the first time. “It is not easy to get into high-level competitions nowadays, every round is a big challenge, I hope they can make it to the main draw, it’s a real test for them,” Tim He Yiming, the Hong Kong head coach, said. There was success too for Reginald Lee Chun-hei and Yoyo Ng Tsz-yau in the mixed doubles, with the pair reaching the final before losing 21-16, 21-19 to Indonesia’s Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja. At the Lithuanian International, a future series event, mixed doubles pair Lui Chun-wai and Fu Chi-yan took silver after losing 21-6, 21-11 to Indonesia’s Amri Syahnawi and Winny Oktavina Kandow in the final. Lui then won bronze in men’s doubles with Chow Hin-long, while Fu won bronze in the women’s doubles with Leung Yuet-yee.
