After two weeks of non-stop competition Siobhan Haughey finally ran out of steam on Thursday, finishing fourth in the 50m freestyle at the Fina World Cup event in the US.

The 25-year-old struggled to keep up with Katarzyna Wasick of Poland, who touched the wall in 23.10 seconds, with American Abbey Weitzeil second in 23.62 and Australia’s Madi Wilson third in 23.73.

Haughey’s time of 23.88 seconds was 0.13 seconds short of her Asian record, but still would not have been enough to earn her bronze in Indianapolis.

Wasick’s gold earned a hat-trick of wins over the distance, after coming first in the races in Berlin and Toronto, and was enough to get her a cheque for US$10,000 for claiming the “triple crown”.

“I’m pleased with the results,” Haughey said. “I’m a little tired right now, so I’m glad I could finish off the last event of the night in a pretty decent time.”

The freestyle specialist got off to a fast start in this year’s World Cup, winning three gold medals – 100m, 200m, and 400m free – in the first leg in Germany two weeks ago, and continued her podium finish in Canada last week, remaining unbeaten in the 100m and 200m and taking bronze in the 400m.

But she skipped the 400m this time around, a race America’s multiple Olympic gold medallist Katie Ledecky won comfortably in 3 minutes, 54.04 seconds.
