Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey has won the silver medal in the 100 metres freestyle at swimming’s short-course World Championships in Melbourne on Thursday.
She finished second to Emma McKeon of Australia, the reigning Olympic champion, who had been the fastest qualifier for the final.
Defending the title she won in Abu Dhabi a year ago, Haughey clocked 50.87 seconds – 0.1 sec behind McKeon. She and the Australian pulled clear of the rest in the second half of the race but McKeon was always in front.
“It was a really exciting and impressive final, as expected,” Hong Kong head coach Chen Jianhong said.

“It’s a bit of a pity that Siobhan lost narrowly, by a hand length. I think her ankle injury may have affected her a little bit.”
The ankle problem, caused by a poolside slip during a training session in Dubai in May, meant that Haughey missed the summer’s long-course World Championships – held in a 50m pool rather than the short-course 25m – and she went 10 months without an international competition after winning her two world titles last December.
Last month she returned to the top level in style as she clinched seven gold medals and one bronze during the World Cup series.
Haughey’s time in Thursday’s final was her best of the season, improving on the 51 seconds she clocked at the World Cup leg in Indianapolis last month.
The 25-year-old is set to race again on Sunday in the 200m freestyle, the other event in which she took gold – in a world-record time – last year.
“We are pleased with Siobhan’s 100m performance, and it proves that her training has been going very well,” Chen said. “The 100m and 200m have different requirements, but this silver medal is a boost for her. We all look forward to seeing how well she swims on Sunday.”
The city’s relay teams have exceeded themselves at times this week, the latest to do so being the men’s 4x50m freestyle quartet, who set a new Hong Kong record.
Cheuk Ming-ho, Ian Ho Yentou and Ng Cheuk-yin were already city record-holders in the event, having set their previous mark in last year’s World Championships. They were joined for this edition by Hayden Kwan, who only became eligible to represent Hong Kong in August, as they lowered the record by nearly one-and-a-half seconds while finishing fourth in their heat in one minute, 27.59 seconds.
The women’s 4x50m freestyle four of Sze Hang-yu, Stephanie Au Hoi-shun, Tinky Ho Nam-wai and Chan Kin-lok finished sixth in their heat in a time of 1:40.36. The veteran Au had earlier swum her final individual event of the week, finishing eighth in her heat in the 50m backstroke.
In the men’s version of the same race, there was disappointment for Ng as he finished his heat in seventh place.
“I messed up my tempo and overthought too much,” said Ng, who nonetheless has had a part in setting three Hong Kong records this week, in the 100m backstroke and two relays. “It’s all experience. I hope I can be better in the rest of the meet.”
Chang Yujuan managed second place in her heat in the 100m individual medley, but a slow race meant that she did not progress. Yeung Hoi-ching, meanwhile, finished eighth in her 200m butterfly heat.
“I’m very satisfied with the young team,” coach Chen said. “The World Championships are a valuable experience for them that will benefit them greatly in the future.”
