Moonie Chu Ka-mong could make a late bid to compete at the Asian Games after an impressive performance in the LCSD Open Championships on Saturday, the last tournament before the Fencing Association closed its rankings to decide their entries for Hangzhou.

At Hong Kong Park Sports Centre, Chu – who was seventh in the women’s épée standings before the event – made it all the way to the final before losing 15-10 to top seed Kaylin Hsieh Sin-yan.

But the result should be good enough to lift her ranking enough that she can qualify as the fourth and last member of the squad that will represent Hong Kong in Hangzhou this summer.

The association said they would update the rankings on Monday to confirm the épée Asian Games squad. The first three members of the team have already been confirmed with world No 1 Vivian Kong Man-wai leading the squad, which also includes Hsieh and Natalie Chan Wai-ling, who lost to Chu at Hong Kong Park.

Kong and Hsieh will also start in the individual event in Hangzhou as the two highest ranked fencers while the next two, Chan and Chu, will only feature in the team event.
