Hong Kong fencer Vivian Kong Man-wai thrashed fierce rival Sera Song to successfully defend her title at the Asian Championships.
The world No 1 epeeist was dominant from start to finish, establishing a solid lead before cruising past the Korean 15-4 in Wuxi, China on Saturday to claim her third Asian title.
“I always said Kong is a world-class fencer and she proved it with a great performance in the final,” Zheng Kangzhao, head coach of Hong Kong, said.
“She lost to Song by one bout in the World Cup last month but made a lot of changes in her tactics for a great win.”

The 29-year-old, whose previous Asian titles came in 2018 and 2022, dispatched Korawan Thanee of Thailand, before avenging her pool stage loss against Singapore’s Elle Koh Meihui with a commanding 15-5 win in the round of 16.
The two-time World Championships bronze medallist went on to edge out Zhu Mingye of China and Choi Injeong of South Korea to reach her fourth Asian Championships final.
Facing Song, whom she displaced at the top of the rankings last month, Kong was merciless right from the start. A 4-1 lead after the first round soon ballooned to an 8-2 advantage in the second, before the left-hander cruised to a stunning win.
The victory snapped Kong’s three-match losing streak against Song, which included a narrow 14-13 defeat in the final of the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates last month, and lifted her to a 5-4 head-to-head record against the Korean.
Kong’s triumph was one of two podium places for Hong Kong on the opening day at Wuxi International Expo Centre.
In men’s sabre, Low Ho-tin managed a bronze medal to tie the city’s best performance at the Asian Championships in the discipline.
The 31-year-old brushed aside Eunice Villanueva of the Philippines and Gisho Kumaresan of India in the earlier knockout stages, before defeating former world champion Oh Sang-uk of South Korea 15-11 for a place in the last four.

Low had to settle for bronze, though, after losing 15-10 to eventual champion Ali Pakdaman of Iran. It was the first individual men’s sabre medal at the Asian Championships for Hong Kong since Antonio Lam Hin-chung took bronze in 2014.
“Thanks to the arrival of the new coach [Lee Wook-jae] from Korea, we are able to make a big breakthrough through Low’s medal,” Zheng said.
Hong Kong’s Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung sent his congratulations to the city’s two medallists.

“We are very encouraged by their performances and proud of Hong Kong fencers for their repeated success at international competitions,” he said in a statement.
In Sunday’s second day of the championships, no Hongkongers made it past the round of 16 in the men’s épée and women’s foil.
