Special Olympics: Hong Kong athletes praised for ‘remarkable achievements’ after winning 75 medals in Germany

Hong Kong’s sports minister has praised the city’s Special Olympians, after the team finished this year’s event in Germany with an impressive 75 medals.
In total, 81 athletes from Hong Kong competed in 13 different sports at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2023, bringing home 39 gold, 25 silver and 11 bronze medals.
According to organisers, 330,000 people attended across eight days to watch any one of the 26 sports on show. Around 6,500 athletes competed, and almost 20,000 volunteers worked to make the event run smoothly.
Secretary for Culture, Sports & Tourism Kevin Yeung called the athletes’ achievements remarkable, and said they had “won glory” for Hong Kong.
Yeung said all the athletes had shown great “skill and perseverance”, adding their performance highlighted the city’s ability to make progress and emerge stronger.

“It is very encouraging and I am proud of them,” Yeung said. “I sincerely congratulate all the athletes and wish them to continue to shine brightly in the future.”
