Endurance racing driver Antares Au hopes his history-making class victory at the 24 Hours of Spa race this month proved that Hong Kong can “actually get things done” in motorsport.
Former finance worker Au teamed up with Italy’s Matteo Cairoli, and Germany’s Tim Heinemann and Jannes Fittje, at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. The quartet finished first in the Bronze Cup, while picking up overall pole position at the legendary track, and a fastest lap of the race for GT3.
Despite being the first ever Chinese driver to stand atop the podium at the iconic race, 44-year-old Huber Motorsport driver Au said that Hong Kong still needs to form an ecosystem to get motorsport “really going” in the city.
“I don’t think that there will be drastic changes in motorsport in Hong Kong after this trophy,” he said. “I wouldn’t be so naive to think after we build a racetrack, or have three more racing teams, then everything will be fine.

“But, I hope it is sending a strong message out, that if you’re willing to spend time and effort on one thing, you can actually get things done.”
