Doo Hoi-kem defied injury to add another medal for Hong Kong at the World University Games on Thursday, as she partnered with Ho Kwan-kit to take bronze in the table tennis mixed doubles.

The pair dominated Japan’s Kasumi Kimura and Jo Yokotani in the quarter-finals, before losing in straight games to Xue Fei and Wang Xiaotong of China in the semi-finals. With no third-place play-off, bronze was theirs.

It was the city’s seventh medal since the Games opened in Chengdu last Friday, and the second for Doo, after she helped the women’s team to bronze.

Having had to retire from her women’s singles round-of-64 match after one game because of an elbow injury on Wednesday, the right-handed Doo had her right arm wrapped in a bandage when playing on Thursday morning.

“It’s a similar injury to the one I had in Oman that also led to a withdrawal in February,” Doo, 26, said. “Back then the situation was still under control, but it looks like it’s an acute inflammation now.
