Olympian Oscar Coggins will not be part of the Hong Kong team that chases back-to-back bronze medals in the mixed relay on Monday, and head coach Andrew Wright admitted bringing him to Hangzhou may have been a mistake.

Coggins, who had been battling personal issues according to head coach Andrew Wright, withdrew from the men’s individual race on Friday after the swim.

In the absence of the former Asian champion, Wong Tsz-to and Charlotte Hall will race alongside Jason Ng Tai-long and Bailee Brown.

Wright said the need for “fresh legs” was why Hall and Wong skipped the individual races, in which Ng and Brown finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

Hong Kong were already down one squad member, after Hilda Choi Yan-yin almost lost a finger in a training accident the day before the team left for Hangzhou.

Still, Wright believes the squad at his disposal has what it takes to fight for a podium spot.
