Hong Kong has the facilities and people it would take to host a Special Olympics, the organisation’s CEO has said, and hinted the city should consider doing so in the near future.

Mary Davis pointed to the National Games in 2025 – which the city is to host jointly with Guangdong province and Macau – as a perfect opportunity to test Hong Kong’s capabilities.

The city is expected to host up to a dozen sports for the Games, with the newly built Kai Tak Sports Park as the hub for events including football, rugby sevens and basketball.

While Italy and Switzerland will host the Special Olympics World Winter Games in 2025 and 2029 respectively, no country has yet been awarded the summer version for 2027, although both Chile and Australia have suggested they may bid to do so.

“It [Hong Kong] has the facilities, there’s going to be a National Games in the Greater Bay Area in 2025 and I think that will be a great lead-in event,” she said.
