Hong Kong fencer Cedric Ho Wai-hang said he had gained a major confidence boost for the Paris Olympics after winning the épée title at the Asian Championships.
Ho led a Hong Kong one-two at the tournament in Kuwait City, coming from behind in Sunday’s final to defeat teammate Anson Ng Ho-tin 15-14.
It brought a first continental medal for both fencers and was the first time Hong Kong had claimed the top two places at the championships, in a timely lift before the Games in France begin next month.
“This is massive, great encouragement,” Ho said. “Winning the individual event will definitely make me more confident.

“But I’d like to bring myself down a little bit and play with a normal mindset at the Paris Games. I believe it will help my performance if I can be more relaxed.”
Ranked No 100 in the world and a bronze medallist at last year’s Asian Games, Ho breezed through the pool stage then saw off two South Korean and two Kazakh fencers to reach the final.
Ng, ranked 29 places higher, twice led, but a determined Ho levelled at 12-12 before inching ahead. Earlier, Ng had dispatched world No 20 and Asian Games silver medallist Akira Komata in the semi-final.
“I was so happy to make the final, but there were mixed feelings,” Ng said. “It felt so amazing.
“The best thing was playing my teammate in the final. We had won medals together at junior, youth and under-23 level. I didn’t expect we would win together at senior level too, and it’s gold and silver, so this is so rare.”
The pair, along with Fong Hoi-sun and Ng Ting-hin, will compete in the men’s team event on Wednesday.
“[Ng] and I beat Japan, South Korea and Kazakhstan fencers in the individual event,” Ho said. “They are strong nations, so if we can beat them individually, we have chances to do that again.”
Hong Kong have won bronze in the men’s team event several times, including last year in Wuxi, China.
In the men’s foil competition, Olympic champion and world No 2 Cheung Ka-long, twice a winner of the Asian title, crashed out in the last 16, losing 15-14 to Kyosuke Matsuyama, the world No 7 from Japan.
Nicholas Choi bowed out in the same round, going down 15-12 to Xu Jie of China. Ryan Choi Chun-yin was the only Hongkonger to reach the quarter-finals, beating compatriot Leung Chin-yu 15-8.
Meanwhile, world No 1 women’s epeeist Vivian Kong Man-wai flew back to Hong Kong and will miss her team event on Tuesday after forfeiting in the individual event on Saturday.
The Post understands that Kong’s injury was not serious and her decision to withdraw was precautionary.

“The injury doesn’t seem to endanger her Olympics participation, but we need to accelerate her recovery,” Octavian Zidaru, the city’s head coach, said.
Sources told the Post that Kong had injured a leg in training before departing for Kuwait, and used the championships as a workout.
“There was a decision before departure that Kong’s involvement would end early if anything went wrong,” the source said. “There are only a few weeks to go before Paris, so [Zidaru] believed it was in Kong’s best interests to walk away.”
