World-class showjumping will return to the city after a six year gap, with The Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show set to take place at the AsiaWorld-Expo in February.
Traditionally held in England every December, the offshoot of the London International Horse Show, which was founded in 1972, will be the first time the elite event has been staged outside the United Kingdom.
Richard Ireland, CEO of organisers Clarion Events Asia, said the idea behind bringing the event to the city was because of its long history with horses and the fact it had a reputation for supporting world-class events.
Before the pandemic, the world governing body FEI staged showjumping competitions in Hong Kong between 2013 and 2019.

“It’s an appreciation from an artistic, racing and an equestrian perspective,” he said. “There was a previous horse show here, so people from Hong Kong have the appetite and interest in equestrian.
“This is a city that understands horse and horse culture, and equestrianism and there was an opportunity in their calendar, so it was just a natural fit between bringing world-class events to Hong Kong.”
Speaking at a launch event on Friday, Ireland said he had great expectations for the event, which will take place from February 14 to 16, but declined to reveal the cost.
“Hong Kong has got a reputation of hosting world-class events; our partners have got history and reputation of delivering world-class events,” he said. “We think it all just came together at the right time.
“Whether it be Art Basel, whether it be Hong Kong Sevens, this city likes world-class events and we felt there was an opportunity post-Covid to be able to bring this show back to Hong Kong.”
The three-day event will feature five performances, including a showjumping class, two equestrian displays and two additional showjumping classes or dressage displays. Hong Kong’s Patrick Lam is expected to compete in a world-class field.
Thirty international show jumpers, each bringing two horses, will be competing for the total prize money of around HK$6.5 million in the show jumping classes; 10 of the world’s best ‘power jumpers’ will also take part in the Puissance – the human equivalent is the high jump – and other competitions.
One performance will be held on the opening night on February 14, with two performances each on the following two days. Tickets ranging from the cheapest at HK$560 to the most expensive at HK$1,199 are available on HK Ticketing.
