Hong Kong athletics chief happy with National Games squad despite missing record breaker
Senior vice-chairman Simon Yeung says local association waiting for answers from Wong Wan-chun, sets athletes personal best aim

One of Hong Kong’s senior athletics chiefs said he was convinced the local association had selected its strongest squad for the National Games next month, despite the exclusion of leading marathon runner Wong Wan-chun.
He later appeared to annoy local athletics officials when he organised his own accommodation for the World University Games in Chengdu that year, because the athletes’ village was nearly two hours travel from his half-marathon start line.
Wong applied to rejoin the Hong Kong team following the expiry of his Li-Ning deal at the end of last year.
Simon Yeung Sai-mo, the senior vice-chairman of the Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA), said if the runner “wants to join again, we need to evaluate the whole situation”.
“We asked him some questions and we’re still waiting for his response,” Yeung added. “He wanted to withdraw from the team [in 2023] and we must respect if an athlete wants to do that, whatever the reason.”
