Ryan Choi Chun-yin has said he hopes his march to FIE Foil World Cup glory in Japan on Saturday can deliver some cheer to Hong Kong.

World champion fencer Choi was at his imperious best in Fukuoka, where he gradually found his groove after surviving a couple of tight opening encounters.

The 28-year-old stormed to a 15-9 victory in the final against Kirill Borodachev, the same man he beat to become Hong Kong’s first world champion back in July.

“What a magical run to win this title – it was one of my best performances for a while,” Choi said.

“Thank you for everyone’s support, and I hope this piece of good news will cheer Hong Kong a bit.”

Choi has had a relatively quiet period, losing in the opening round of last month’s World Cup leg in Spain then falling short in the individual competition at the National Games in Hong Kong, exiting at the quarter-final stage.
