Seasoned tennis player Marin Cilic said he decided to start his season at the Bank of China Hong Kong Tennis Open so he could spend more time with his family back home over the festive period.

Speaking after his 6-3, 6-2 first-round win over French player Adrian Mannarino on Monday, Cilic also said he believed he was “in a good position to have some really good results this year”.

“It’s always tricky [against Mannarino]; he is fantastic on these kinds of fast courts,” said the 37-year-old Croat.

“I played an extremely efficient match, did great things and used my chances.

“There were a couple of other opportunities where I could have done something more. I had maybe one game where I was a little bit under pressure on my serve, but overall it was a really clean and solid match.”
