Hong Kong fencing star Ryan Choi welcomes ‘exciting and refreshing’ new generation
World No 1’s ultimate goal is Olympic gold to complete career, intimates he could quit after 2028 Los Angeles Games

Ryan Choi Chun-yin has welcomed the “exciting and refreshing” emergence of a new generation of Hong Kong fencing stars, and intimated that he could quit the sport following the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
World champion Choi combined with Cheung Ka-long, the two-time Olympic champion, and the youthful pair of Cheng Tit-nam, 20, and Mike Lam Ho-long, 18, for team gold from this month’s Foil World Cup leg in Paris.
Harris Ho-Shing-him, 16, and 21-year-old Leung Chin-yu have also gained senior recognition.
“None of them have unlocked their potential yet, but you can see they have the ability to be strong; maybe stronger than us [Choi and Cheung],” Choi, the world No 1, said.
“It’s exciting and refreshing to have them with us, and the atmosphere is really good.”
Choi said credit for Hong Kong’s deepening well of talent belonged with the coaching pair of Greg Koenig and Maurizio Zomparelli.
