Hong Kong triathletes’ performances ‘nothing to write home about’ at Asia Cup in China
Top city pair, Oscar Coggins and Bailee Brown, finished 12th and ninth, respectively, after health issues in qualifier event for Asian Games
There was “nothing to write home about” from Hong Kong’s triathletes in the Lianyungang Asia Triathlon Cup leg on Saturday, but head coach Andrew Wright paid tribute to the gutsy efforts of under-the-weather pair Oscar Coggins and Bailee Brown.
Needing podium finishes to secure automatic Asian Games qualification, Coggins and Brown came home 12th and ninth, respectively.
New Zealander Dylan McCullough returned from a 574-day injury absence to win the men’s race, while Zhang Xirui of China finished second to book his ticket to September’s Games. Xisca Tous crossed fractionally ahead of Martina Ayu Pratiwi to claim women’s honours.
“Oscar and Bailee have not been themselves for the past couple of weeks, they’ve been dealing with fatigue and a virus of some sort,” Wright said.
“They were a bit off it, but it was pleasing that they still produced solid results.”
Fit again after overcoming a stress fracture of his spine and torn Achilles, McCullough delivered the fastest swim and bike times, establishing what would prove an impregnable lead before stopping the clock on 57 minutes and 41 seconds. Zhang crossed 10 seconds behind, while Semen Kashitsyn of Russia claimed bronze in 57:58.
