ONE Championship: Hong Kong’s Phoebe Lo out to emulate Yu Yau-pui as she faces Nongam Fairtex at ONE Friday Fights 62

  • Nongam is looking for a fifth successive victory, which would leave her on the cusp of securing a multi-fight contract

Hong Kong’s Phoebe Lo Tsz-ching faces local hero Nongam Fairtex in a Muay Thai catchweight contest in ONE Friday Fights 62 at Lumpinee Stadium.

Lo is already in Thailand and is training for the bout at the Superbon Gym in Bangkok. She will be looking to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Yu Yau-pui who became a major star after winning five fights out of five on the ONE Friday Fights series last year.

Yu went on to sign a long-term contract with the promotion and is coming off an impressive win over Lara Fernandez at ONE Fight Night 20 earlier this year. Lo would be looking to replicate that success although she might struggle to find suitable opponents at 110 pounds (49.9 kilograms).

Yu competes at atomweight alongside stars such as Stamp Fairtex, Allycia Rodriguez and Phetjeeja Lukjaoporongtom. That is the lightest weight class that ONE Championship normally offers female fighters and is for athletes weighing 115 pounds or less after hydration tests.

So Lo might need to put on a few pounds if she wants to compete regularly for ONE Championship. However, matchmakers have handed her this catchweight bout to begin with and she faces an opponent who is riding high after winning four out of four last year.

Nongam trains alongside Stamp at the Fairtex Gym in Pattaya. A fifth straight win would leave her on the cusp of securing a multi-fight ONE Championship contract and the opportunity to compete on the Amazon Prime events.

In total, there are 12 fights on the card. This event was originally set to be headlined by a featherweight fight between France’s Jimmy Vienot and Thailand’s Shadow Singha Mawynn but the latter withdrew after falling ill.

Instead, a catchweight contest between Mongkolkaew Sor Sommai and ET Wankhongohm MBK serves as the main event. The two Thai fighters will face off at 130 pounds in the headliner at Lumpinee Stadium.

Lo’s fight with Nongam will be the eighth of the night. The event gets under way at 7:30pm (ICT) and will be available to view live on the ONE Championship YouTube page in Hong Kong.
