Korean middleweight prodigy Hwang In-soo suffered his first professional MMA defeat last weekend – and in some style. Hwang was 4-0 heading into his bout against fellow newcomer Choi Won-jun, who had a record of 4-2, for Korean promotion Road FC. And he was perhaps a little overconfident, charging at his opponent from the bell at the Wonju Gymnasium, and running straight into a right hand from Choi. Hwang’s body went limp and he fell to the mat, with Choi reeling off a series of undefended punches to Hwang’s head before the referee stepped in to signal the fastest knockout in Road history. The 29-year-old Choi, seemingly shocked at what had just happened, jumped onto the top of the cage to celebrate in front of an equally stunned crowd as Hwang staggered to his feet. Hwang had been hyped as a potential new star for the Korean Promotion after quickly compiling four wins in the space of eight months. He had not competed since March 2018, however, having seen a bout cancelled last July against Yang Hae-jun. Yang was back headlining Saturday’s Road FC 054 card, where he defeated La In-jae to become the new middleweight champion. It was the first defeat of La’s career, with Yang now 13-6 after a two-round war where he got a TKO victory via ground and pound. Earlier on the main card, Kim Se-young won a unanimous decision against Evgeniy Ryazanov in their featherweight bout. Yoo Jae-nam submitted Kim Tae-gyun at 3:05 of the first round with a guillotine choke, after another quick first-round TKO with Shim Gun-oh defeating Ryu Ki-hoon after just 56 seconds of their openweight match. Jang Ik-hwan also secured a unanimous decision against Jung Sang-jin.
