UFC 242: Conor McGregor says ‘book my rematch for Moscow’ as Khabib calls for Russia event
- Lightweight champion keen to fight at 80,000-seat stadium in Russian capital
- ‘The Notorious’ is all too happy to oblige, calling out old rival on Twitter
The consensus seems to be that Tony Ferguson deserves the next lightweight title shot against Khabib Nurmagomedov. But unsurprisingly, Conor McGregor has tried to put his name in the picture.
“Book my rematch for Moscow,” the Irishman wrote in a tweet which picked up nearly 150,000 likes in nine hours.
Former featherweight and lightweight champion McGregor’s words seemed to be a nod to Khabib expressing a desire to fight in the Russian capital.
“I wanna come back here, maybe next year, why not,” the Dagestan-born Russian said at The Arena on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates.
UFC 242: Khabib Nurmagomedov says Tony Ferguson ‘deserves this’ next title shot
“The UFC has already made an exclusive contract with Abu Dhabi, we’ll see. Maybe in Russia, in Moscow, in 80,000 [seater] stadium. I think I can fight in Moscow, I can fight here in Abu Dhabi.”
“I love this region – I’ve been in Turkey, Europe, Russia, even Dagestan, US,” he said. “Brazil, Canada, I’ve been everywhere. Africa. But this place is the most safe place in the world, Emirates, Abu Dhabi and Dubai, it’s an amazing place.
“Of course I wanna fight here. I have very good energy here, I love these people, these people love me. I hope they like my performance and they enjoy the whole event.”
McGregor’s call for a rematch with Khabib did not go down too well with fellow lightweight Justin Gaethje – with whom he was reportedly in talks to fight before breaking his hand in sparring.
“You’re a tool. You have lost everything already. You are a s*** human, father, and husband. F*** you,” Gaethje replied to McGregor’s tweet.
