Former interim champion Covington was expected to headline Madison Square Garden with Usman on November 2.
But neither fighter could reach a deal and UFC president White quickly moved on to booking Jorge Masvidal against Nate Diaz for the “BMF” belt.
“You heard me say in interviews, that was the fight I was gonna make. Colby Covington can say whatever he wants. We make fights for a living, that’s what we do,” White said at Thursday night’s UFC 244 press conference in New York.
“We go after guys, we say this is next, this is the date. Do you want the fight? Right? And obviously he wanted more money to fight Usman.
