UFC: Conor McGregor charged with assault for punching elderly man in pub; faces possible prison sentence

  • Irishman will appear in Dublin court on October 11 after being served summons by police for April pub incident
  • Charge carries maximum prison sentence of six months

Conor McGregor will reportedly appear in court next week to face an assault charge for punching an elderly man in a Dublin pub.

The Irish Independent and ESPN reported that the Irishman has been served a summons by police to appear before a judge at Dublin District Court on Friday.

Karen Kessler, a spokeswoman for McGregor, told ESPN that McGregor’s team had no further comment.

The former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion gave a grovelling apology on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show in August after footage emerged of the April 2019 incident.

Irish authorities reportedly directed earlier this year that the 31-year-old, who has not fought in the UFC since October 2018, should be prosecuted over the alleged assault.

McGregor is said to be facing a single assault charge, the Independent reported, under Section Two of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of six months or a fine of €1,500 (US$1,647), or both.

The victim of the attack was reportedly “very shaken” after being punched by McGregor at the Marble Arch pub in Drimnagh on April 6 for refusing to drink a shot of his personal whiskey brand, Proper No 12.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star on condition of anonymity, the victim called McGregor a “bully with money”.
