In identifying the UFC’s Fighter of the Year, two names stand out from the pack: middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and welterweight contender Jorge Masvidal.
The two stars have had such incredible success since January it’s difficult to imagine anybody else challenging them, even with several UFC cards left on the 2019 calendar.
Both have fought three times. Both have won three times. Both have had their hands on belts. Only one, of course, can be crowned Fighter of the Year.
Who deserves that lofty title? That’s difficult to say. Let’s take a closer look:
The Case for Masvidal
Masvidal began 2019 amid a rough patch. He had not competed since late 2017, and had lost his two most recent fights. Nobody could have imagined he would be in this debate, which makes his achievements even more impressive.
