UFC: Dana White confirms ‘Neanderthals’ Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal set for Las Vegas in July

UFC president Dana White confirmed that welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and BMF winner Jorge Masvidal are to fight in July after expressing his frustration at their near-physical altercation at a cross-promotional Super Bowl event last week.
The pair were seen squaring up and exchanging verbal abuse before teammates and officials intervened and diffused the matter. Usman and Masvidal have since accused each other of instigating the altercation.

“I don’t love it. People think that because I’m a promoter I’m like ‘cha-ching’, but it’s not great for us,” White said on The Will Cain Show.

“We’re here at the Super Bowl – the NFL – and these two are acting like Neanderthals in here. The problem is, the people who are working in the media, it scares people like this. That’s a scary thing when that goes down.

“If they touch each other, now the police get involved,” White continued. “We’re regulated by the government, now the athletic commissions are getting involved

“Those two are going to fight in Las Vegas, International Fight Week weekend. For 25 minutes they can do whatever they want to each other. You don’t have to do it at Radio Row at the Super Bowl.”

Both Nigerian-American Usman (professional MMA record 16-1) and Cuban-American Masvidal (35-13) had expressed preference to fight Irish star Conor McGregor if available.

The 32-year-old Usman, who defended his title against contender Colby Covington in December last year, is recovering from a ligament injury in his hand.

The 35-year-old Masvidal, meanwhile, recently collected two UFC awards for his record-breaking knockout of Ben Askren last year.
