Former interim champion Colby Covington demands a rematch with welterweight champion Kamaru Usman after losing in his closely fought title bout at UFC 245 last December. Nigerian-American Usman won via punches in the fifth round.

“I will be sitting out until they give me my rematch and my world championship that I never lost,” Covington said to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani after more than a month of media silence. “Unless they can find some other big fight but I don’t see them doing that. I’m fighting for a world championship or I might not ever be fighting again.”

The 31-year-old American (professional record 15-2), who lambasted referee Marc Goddard for waving off the fight among other decisions, insists he took time away from the spotlight to give everyone the opportunity to watch the fight.

“I’ve been sitting back and seeing if these so-called journalists in the MMA world were gonna actually analyse the fight,” he said. “They can’t actually look at the facts of the fight – review the tape of UFC 245 and give it a fair call.

“I know I am the most hated man in the UFC and in sports, but man analyse the fight,” said Covington, adding that he felt he won “every round” up until the knockdown and subsequent waving off of the fight.
