UFC’s Chinese champ Zhang Weili moves training camp again amid coronavirus fears

  • Zhang cuts short Thailand stint and heads for Abu Dhabi after abandoning Beijing camp earlier this month
  • UFC president Dana White says ‘no danger’ to UFC 248 co-main event
Chinese strawweight champion Zhang Weili has moved training camp for the second time ahead of her UFC 248 title defence, following the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus.

Zhang, who is set to face former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in Las Vegas on March 7, abandoned her usual Beijing camp earlier this month and headed to Thailand.

But that camp lasted just a matter of days, following the spread of the deadly virus in Thailand, with “Magnum” now heading to Abu Dhabi while the UFC works on expediting her to the US.

“Goodbye Thailand, and hello Abu Dhabi,” Zhang wrote in an Instagram post.

“Everyone is trying the best to make my title defence fight happen. I'm on the flight to Abu Dhabi now, though just acclimatised the climate and training in Thailand. We're going to another country again. What a rush!”

UFC president Dana White said there is “no danger” to the UFC 248 co-main event, and that Zhang only left Thailand as a precautionary measure.

“There’s literally no danger whatsoever,” White said of the potential for the fight being cancelled. “She’s training down in Thailand and obviously there’s some things going on. We want to make sure she’s safe.

“The second most infected place right now is Thailand. We’re moving her to Abu Dhabi to make sure everybody’s safe.”
