Most MMA fans can agree that Zhang Weili’s five-round war against Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 was one of the greatest fights in the history of the sport, male or female.

But UFC lightweight Islam Makhachev, a teammate of the divisional champion and his fellow Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov, attracted criticism with a sexist tweet after the fight.

“This is not a woman’s sport,” he wrote.

His opinion was lambasted all over social media, and Khabib’s long-time rival Conor McGregor was particularly furious.

“An absolute cretin,” McGregor tweeted. “A Convicted Steroid cheat that will do anything to avoid impact and stall a fight, and then talks down on one of the greatest exchanges of combat ever produced by our female combatants. These little gremlins! It’s back on. Filthy rats. Shame on the game.”

Makhachev later deleted the tweet.
