Denice “The Menace” Zamboanga has a simple explanation for why she has so quickly risen to prominence in One Championship’s atomweight division.
“I enjoy fighting,” says the 23-year-old, laughing. “I like the idea of punching people’s faces.”
The Filipino fighter only signed with the Singapore-based One outfit last year but has since gone 2-0 to take her overall record in the sport to 7-0.
Word from the Philippines had been that the former karate stand-out had talent to burn, but it was the way she left veteran Japanese warrior Mei “V.V.” Yamaguchi (21-11-1) battered and bruised after taking a decision on February 28 that really turned heads.
Almost immediately One’s power brokers were throwing Zamboanga’s name out there as the next fighter to be given a shot at wresting the atomweight crown from Angela “Unstoppable” Lee (10-2). The bout seemed to be a lock for one of One’s scheduled events in Singapore over the next month until the coronavirus outbreak put all events on hold. It won’t happen soon, but apparently it still will happen.
“I actually didn’t expect to be facing Angela Lee soon. It’s a good thing that it’s a big challenge for me,” Zamboanga says. “My strength against her will be my agility. But I want to be a surprise against her. Each fight there is a different Denice. I want to shock everyone and show a different Denice against Angela Lee. People are shocked that I’ll be fighting her so fast – two fights and a title fight. This is very special to me, and I promise I will surprise.”
