UFC: Dana White shoots down Donald Cerrone’s plan to ‘bang out three fights in one week’

  • ‘Cowboy’ signals intent to become first fighter to compete on three back-to-back events, as UFC returns to action in Florida
  • ‘I love that the kid thinks like that,’ says UFC president White, ‘but it makes no sense’

We all knew the chances of Donald Cerrone getting to turn straight around and fight again in Jacksonville were slim to none, but Dana White had to go and officially ruin the fun.

Cerrone (36-14, one no contest) is looking to bounce back from his 40-second TKO by Conor McGregor when he goes up against Anthony Pettis (22-10) in a welterweight clash that will headline the UFC 249 prelims on ESPN at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena on May 9.

And in true “Cowboy” style, the 37-year-old sounded his intent to fight on the UFC’s other Fight Night cards in the same venue on May 13 and May 16. The promotion is determined to come back with a bang after postponing and cancelling a string of events because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m going to go in there and win this fight and say, ‘Hey Dana, you got anybody lined up for Wednesday? Because I’m going to stay here in the RV’,” Cerrone told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto this week

“I want to be the first fighter to bang three fights out in a week,” he added.

We all know Cerrone is probably the only fighter willing to actually go in there and do that, but White spoiled the party in his own interview with Okamoto on Friday.

“Listen, I love that the kid thinks like that,” White said after announcing the line-ups for the UFC’s May 13 and may 16 shows.

“But especially with that’s going on right now, trying to be as safe as we possibly can, having somebody fight three times in a span of six or seven days absolutely, positively does not make sense.”
