UFC: Stipe Miocic says he is ‘working on securing dates’ for a heavyweight trilogy with Daniel Cormier

  • Heavyweight champion Miocic: ‘I would’ve already fought and retired DC’ were it not for eye injury
  • Former double champion Cormier says ‘just give me a date’ as in-form Ngannou looms

UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic has said his team is already working on dates for a trilogy fight with Daniel Cormier.

Miocic (19-3), who said he is recovering from a torn retina, was responding to former double champion Cormier’s (22-2, one no contest) comments that he would fight contender Francis Ngannou if Miocic is not interested in a rubber match.

Miocic and Cormier each have a win against each other, with Miocic regaining his belt after a fourth-round TKO against “DC” in August last year. Neither have fought since their rematch.

“I’ve already said I’m going to fight DC. He just likes to make noise. My team is working on securing a training location and dates [with the] UFC. I have five belts at home. I don’t needs to sit on anything. If I didn’t have a torn retina, I would’ve already fought and retired [Daniel Cormier],” the 37-year-old Miocic tweeted.

Following UFC 249 – the first of three events this week – UFC president Dana White said the heavyweight division “must move on” if Miocic continues to sit out during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Miocic, a part-time firefighter, fired back at White, saying he has no control over the pandemic that continues to hit his native US daily.

The 41-year-old Cormier, who beat Miocic via first-round TKO in 2018, responded to Miocic’s tweet:

“Champ, that’s perfect and all I wanna hear. Just give me a date! That’s it, let us all know. You said the fall, when in the fall is all we are asking,” he tweeted.

Ngannou, who knocked out contender Jairzinho Rozenstruik in brutal fashion on Saturday, has said on multiple occasions that he was frustrated with the situation at the top of the division. The Cameroonian is likely to face the winner of the trilogy if the fight is booked.
