Satirical TV host John Oliver has snapped back at UFC president Dana White in a Last Week Tonight segment dated May 31. White had originally accused Oliver of ‘using selective facts’ in his rant over sports events being held during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Oliver had pointed out that three UFC staff – fighter Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and two of his cornermen – had tested positive for the coronavirus a day before the scheduled UFC 249 event last month. Oliver also jokingly asked viewers why White did not think of the name “UFC-Sea” for his Fight Island venture. White confirmed he had trademarked the name while adding to Oliver, ‘I’m not giving you a cut’ . He also appeared to forget Oliver’s name until prompted by the ESPN host. “We mentioned that UFC president Dana White was planning to stage fights on a private island to skirt travel restrictions into the US ... Just two days after our show aired, the UFC filed trademark applications for the term ‘UF-Sea’ and Dana White even confirmed that it wasn't a coincidence,” Oliver said. The UFC has filed 4 new trademark applications for UFSEA. The filings indicate an intent to use the UFSEA trademark in connection with mixed martial arts events and a clothing brand. These filings come on the heels of the UFC's filings back in April for 'FIGHT ISLAND.' pic.twitter.com/Cqa6AZEESW — Josh Gerben (@JoshGerben) May 27, 2020 “OK, first, Dana White intentionally forgetting my name is a truly excellent neg, or rather it would be if he weren't only number 83 on GQ's list of the 100 most powerful bald men in the world from 2013. Now that is a neg right there, Dana. “Much more importantly, I'm not remotely mad here. I want you to use that name. In fact, I think you should let us rename all of your events, because frankly you're not very good at it. Take UFC 249, it's just your logo plus a number, where's the pizazz there? What about this ‘UFC Knuckle Opera’, or ‘Dust Up at the Beef Factory’, or ‘Large Hamboy Collider’. It's better right? Oliver went on to suggest names changes for White to consider because his “doesn't sound like the head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship” but like “the third-best real estate agent in Sacramento, or a video where a white woman calls the cops on a black family for smiling too hard. “I'm not mad at [White] for stealing our idea for UFC. We may not even be the first person he's stolen from. He only filed for the Fight Island trademark a week after a TMZ reporter suggested to him that he call it that. “In fact, the only thing that he's done here that annoyed me was accuse us of using 'selective facts', because facts are to me what other people's ideas are to Dana White. They're something I'm very passionate about. What apparently upset him was that in our piece we pointed out that three people – a UFC fighter and his two cornermen all tested positive for the coronavirus before a recent event, underscoring the fact that it seems impossible to return to sports completely without risk right now,” Oliver continued, citing White’s claim that the UFC had only come back with three positive tests among the 1,100 conducted tests. “[The 1,100 tests] does seem to minimise it, until you learn that all those tests were administered to just 300 people,” Oliver said. “Basically, Dana was quoting a larger number to make the positive number look less significant here, which seems like, I don't know, a selective fact.” Oliver then outlined some of White’s previous trademark ventures, including his reality fight show Lookin’ For a Fight , the one-off “Baddest Mother F*****” belt won by Jorge Masvidal, amongst others, before going into specifics about what the trademark did or did not cover. “Would Dana White sue you if [‘Baddest Mother F*****’] was put on something not covered by his trademark?” Oliver asked, before raising a mug with the phrase on it from under his desk. “There's actually a number of trademarks that they've applied for and got, and then let expire, my favourite of which is “You Will Submit” ... Since Dana took something that we came up with, we're going to return the favour. Guess who is officially in the process of owning the trademark ‘You Will Submit’. Who's the baddest mother f***** now, Dana?”
