Former UFC double champion Conor McGregor has broken his silence surrounding the death of George Floyd in May and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests across the US. Viral video footage showed Floyd, an unarmed black man, struggling to breathe while Minnesota police office Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes – sparking online outrage and street protests. Chauvin has since been sacked and charged with third-degree murder. The 31-year-old McGregor (22-4) – who in March urged the government of his native Republic of Ireland to adopt more stringent Covid-19 measures – posted an illustration of a white broken heart against a black background. “There is no place for injustice, racism and intolerance in this world! We must really listen and learn from those in pain,” said McGregor, who last fought in a first-round TKO win against Donald Cerrone in January. “Be the example of the change you want to see! Praying, hoping, and believing everyday that this is all a part of the lords plan to lead us to a better and brighter future ahead. God speed everyone.” McGregor’s head coach, John Kavanagh, also shared his thoughts on the increased racial tension in the US. He retweeted a message shared by Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar on Tuesday. View this post on Instagram There is no place for injustice, racism and intolerance in this world! Despite the progress we have made, it is no less virulent today and no less dangerous. We need to show solidarity as people of all races [and] backgrounds around the world come together to stop its spread and defeat it.” Kavanagh, who called for a McGregor vs lightweight contender Justin Gaethje matchup on Instagram Live last week, also expressed his gratitude towards light heavyweight champion Jon Jones helping to clear up the streets on Tuesday. https://t.co/yg5Mqy47gr — Coach Kavanagh (@John_Kavanagh) June 1, 2020
