The UFC pulled, then reinstated, a fighter for UFC 250, after an initial test for Covid-19 came back positive. The corner man has since undergone a further, which came back negative, and the fighter has been reinstated. Photo: AFP

UFC 250: corner man initially tests positive for coronavirus, but second test comes back negative so fighter reinstated

  • One of the corner men for Ian Heinisch, who is scheduled to compete on the preliminary card at UFC 250, tests positive and the fighter is removed
  • However reports say a second test has come back negative and Heinisch has been reinstated

Ian Heinisch, originally pulled from UFC’s 250 card due to one of his corner men initially testing positive for Covid-19, has now been reinstated after a second test returned negative.

According to Yahoo Sports, middleweight fighter Heinisch was replaced by Anthony Ivy, however, a second test overturned an initial positive one for the fighter’s corner man.

Heinisch will still take on Gerald Meerschaert as part of the preliminary card for UFC 250 this Saturday in Las Vegas. Last month Ronaldo Souza was pulled from UFC 249 after he and two of his corner men tested positive.

The fight is being overseen by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and is taking place at the UFC’s Apex facility. Amanda Nunes is scheduled to defend her women’s featherweight title against Felicia Spencer in the main fight, while Raphael Assuncao will take on Cody Garbrandt in a bantamweight bout.

The UFC has taken criticism for trying to resume fights as quickly as possible, without fans, since the global pandemic put an end to virtually all professional sports leagues across the world. UFC president Dana White, who originally tried to host UFC 249 on tribal lands at a Native American casino, has now held four cards in both Florida and Las Vegas with minimal issues.

He also recently announced the first fight date for Fight Island, which is tentatively scheduled for June 27, however the location of the island has yet to be revealed.
