Demetrious Johnson has taken the ONE Championship flyweight division by storm, winning the flyweight grand prix in his first year in the promotion. “Mighty Mouse” may have got a big, shiny belt for his efforts, but it seems many have forgotten who wears the real title, and have written him off. “Yes, of course I think I don’t have the credit,” Adriano Moraes told SCMP MMA’s Post Fight Podcast . “But I’m the champion. The most important is when my friends, my family, my wife, my amazing mum, say I’m their hero, and this for me is all right. “I really appreciate that, and for the other people, they are just the others. I’m keeping my work going, and let’s see what’s gonna happen.” Brazilian Moraes (18-3) and former UFC flyweight champion Johnson (30-3), of the US, were set to meet in Chongqing, China for the title in April before the global outbreak of the coronavirus saw the show moved to Jakarta, Indonesia. ONE tried to move things around again, scheduling some fights behind closed doors in Singapore, but eventually had to put everything on hold, like every other sporting promotion. “Almost two years out of the cage, you know – I’m an athlete, I love to go to fight,” said Moraes, who last fought in January 2019, when he reclaimed his belt from Geje Eustaquio. “So let’s see what’s gonna happen, everybody’s looking forward for this fight. I’ve had a lot of time to train technique and get a better Adriano Moraes – hopefully I can show the best Adriano ever. I’m gonna be really ready for this fight. I want to defend my belt.” ONE Championship job cuts ‘hurt my heart’, says Aung La Johnson tore through the UFC’s flyweight division with a record 11 consecutive title defences, before a split decision loss to Henry Cejudo in 2018. The man many consider the “GOAT” of MMA has not had it all his own way in ONE, though, with the promotion’s hydration rules effectively meaning he is fighter a weight class up. That means the 5ft 3 Johnson (1.6 metres) is fighting bigger, taller, rangier opponents, and Moraes is the tallest yet at 5ft 8 (1.72 metres). “I’m not too big but I have advantages, my height is a little bit more,” Moraes said. “I want to show more my striking, I think he’s gonna be giving me space. So let’s see if I can get a beautiful KO. It’s a long time since I have got a KO on anyone, but I’m working hard to do this in my next one.” Johnson is the clear-cut No 1 contender after winning the grand prix but Moraes said he wanted to give No 5-ranked Reece McLaren the next shot if he beats Johnson. “For me, in the semi-final of the world flyweight grand prix, Reece McLaren won against Danny Kingad, for me the final should be Demetrious against Reece,” Moraes said. “Reece was a bantamweight contender, I think he’s one of the most tough guys in this line-up. For me the next one in line is Reece McLaren. “Thank you God and ONE Championship for making these rankings so I can line up these guys and fight against each one, one per month,” he added, laughing.
