UFC: Dustin Poirier heads to hospital after brutal war with Dan Hooker – ‘that was a fun one’

  • ‘The Diamond’ updates fans on his condition from stretcher in back of ambulance after beating Hooker by unanimous decision
  • Poirier thanks Khabib Nurmagomedov after lightweight champ congratulates him on ‘great fight’

Fans hoping to hear more from Dustin Poirier after his huge win over Dan Hooker at UFC on ESPN 12 were left hanging, but for good reason – “The Diamond” was taken to hospital shortly after the brutal five-round fight on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

“That was a fun one,” Poirier said, as he applied an ice pack to his badly bruised left eye, under which he was also sporting a nasty cut. There were a combined 308 strikes landed – the third most in a five-round UFC lightweight fight.

“Going to the hospital to go and get my head scanned. Then going home to see my wife and see my daughter. Thank you all,” the 31-year-old added.

Poirier (26-6, one no contest) also tweeted out a picture from the back of the ambulance on his stretcher, showing off his war wounds before they had been tended to by medical staff.

Along with the picture he wrote, “25 minutes! Paid in full!” after going the distance with “The Hangman” in an instant classic.

Poirier also thanked Khabib Nurmagomedov – who had beaten him last time out by third-round submission at UFC 244 – after the lightweight champion congratulated him on his victory.

“Thank you champ,” wrote the American, after Nurmagomedov had commended him on a “great fight” with New Zealand’s Hooker.

When ESPN’s Ariel Helwani suggested he fight fellow former interim champ Tony Ferguson next, Poirier responded: “Damn! Let me rest, bruh!”
