Randy Couture praises Dana White for bringing UFC back but says PFL made right call to wait amid pandemic
- ‘We spent a lot of time and energy developing this format, this platform and it worked,’ says PFL commentator and UFC legend
- American insists it makes sense to ‘come back in 2021 and do it the way it should be done’ rather than ‘half-ass a season’
It’s been a tumultuous year – personally and professionally – for MMA legend Randy Couture, to put it lightly.
After suffering a heart attack last October because of a blood clot in his artery (and walking himself to hospital), the retired former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champ saw his day job as the owner of the Xtreme Couture gym in Las Vegas put in jeopardy when the coronavirus pandemic forced it to temporarily shut down.
Then the 57-year-old American’s role as a commentator for the Professional Fighters League was also put on ice as the promotion cancelled its 2020 season.
To top it all off, he then got into a freak ATV accident this month with his partner Mindy Robinson, which required surgery. “It’s not gonna hurt my feelings to see 2021 roll in here, for sure,” Couture told SCMP MMA.
“It was kind of a silly accident,” he added. “My hat blew off as I was coming down my driveway from the neighbours’ house. I went to turn around to go get the hat and ran into a fence post in the dark. It was kind of stupid.
