Welsh veteran John Phillips received some pre-fight tips in the back from Khamzat Chimaev, the man who “smashed” him mercilessly on his UFC debut in July. But Chimaev’s advice did nothing to prevent the 35-year-old Phillips (22-11, one no contest) getting an even bigger beat down from South Korea’s “Iron Turtle” Park Jun-yong (12-4) at UFC Fight Island 6 on Sunday. The 29-year-old set a new UFC middleweight three-round record for ground strikes en route to a unanimous decision, his tally of 258 outdoing Matt Riddle’s 251 ground strikes landed at UFC Fight Night: Lauzon vs Stevens in 2009. There were scores of 30-25 across the board, with Park picking up two 10-8 rounds from each judge. Jun Yong Park's reaction when @dc_mma told him he set the UFC record for ground strikes: "More than Chimaev?" #UFCFightIsland6 pic.twitter.com/9fhd1Cg8qp — ESPN MMA (@espnmma) October 17, 2020 When told by former UFC two division champ Daniel Cormier, who was commentating on the ESPN broadcast, that he had set the record, Park was bemused. “More than Chimaev?” he asked. The Chechen-born Swede (9-0) was inside Flash Forum on Fight Island – the scene of his two dominant finishes this summer over Phillips and then Rhys McKee – to corner Guram Kutateladsze for his win against Mateusz Gamrot, and then took a cageside seat with UFC president Dana White. The surging Chimaev has been willing to take on all comers in both the middleweight division and at welterweight, where his next fight is likely to take place against a ranked opponent. Park is similarly keen to stake his claim for a top-15 spot. Park’s UFC debut didn’t go to plan, tapping out to a second-round anaconda choke by Anthony Hernandez at UFC Fight Night 159: Andrade vs Zhang in Shenzhen in August 2019. But he rebounded with a unanimous decision win on home soil in Busan, South Korea against Marc-Andre Barriault last December. “I’m a company man, I don’t care about the records, whoever they send me, I’ll hit,” Park later said. “I’ll fight whenever the company tells me to and just like every other fighter on earth, my goal is to be a champion. “I’m really thankful for the UFC in this difficult time with corona, that we can fight and get up in the rankings and make a living for ourselves.”
