Georges St-Pierre offered a number of clarifications on what is an ongoing saga concerning a potential legacy bout between himself and Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov. Speaking on Sportsnet’s Tim & Sid Show , St-Pierre said two years ago that Nurmagomedov and himself were trying to work out a fight , but he said the UFC was not interested in it at the time. “I’ve never been offered [that fight].” said the 39-year-old St-Pierre. “We tried to make the fight happen, and it fell. The UFC said they had a different plan for Khabib.” The hosts of the show then played a clip of an interview with UFC president Dana White and another Sportsnet reporter, which was recorded January 14 in which White was asked if the potential super bout was still on. “If tomorrow night [Khabib] tells me I’ll come back and the only fight I’ll do is Georges St-Pierre, it looks like I got to get to work,” said White, who is currently in Abu Dhabi to kick off a trio of cards on Fight Island starting this weekend. St-Pierre clarified things have changed in two years, using an analogy that alluded to his hesitation to fight Nurmagomedov, who announced his retirement after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October. UFC: McGregor vows to KO Poirier ‘inside 60 seconds’ “The thing is in business when you make an offer to someone, the offer needs to be taken at the moment,” said St-Pierre about the initial planned fight negotiations that took place two years ago. “If I make you an offer to buy a car, if I’m going to give you 5K [US$5,000] or 10K to buy your car, it’s right now. If you refuse the offer, you cannot wait one year or two years and say, ‘Hey the car that you wanted for 5K, I am going to give it to you now’.” St-Pierre, who has not fought since beating Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in 2017, said after talks disintegrated, he moved on. “Time for me has passed and I couldn’t wait for that opportunity to come, so at one point I lost hope. so I had to move on with my life. So I’m not sure about it, I would have to think about it.” St-Pierre said there are a number of challenges that would make fighting Nurmagomedov in 2021 difficult for him. Montreal, where St-Pierre lives and trains, is under heavy lockdown and restrictions after a resurgence in coronavirus cases. He said one of the biggest things is what weight they would fight at, noting he wakes up in the morning at 183 pounds (83kgs). Nurmagomedov fights at lightweight, which caps fighters at 155lbs (70kgs). St-Pierre added that age (Nurmagomedov is 32) and the fact he believes his opponent would be better at cutting weight for a fight, also have to be taken into account. He also noted Nurmagomedov has still been able to train regularly back home in Dagestan as Covid-19 restrictions have been much less severe in the area. “I cannot train right now. There is Covid here. The gyms are closed. I cannot even have a friend at home,” St-Pierre said. “It’s my worst nightmare, right now I cant do nothing. I am doing shadowboxing here. I will have to break the law and I can’t do that. Normally when I train I have to fly training partners in, because it’s hard to find good quality of training partners who can look like your opponent.” St-Pierre said this is the first time he is hearing renewed chatter about a bout with Nurmagomedov, adding that he has not received any calls and is not in the correct mental condition for a fight against “The Eagle”. UFC: White to push Khabib ‘as hard as I can’ for retirement comeback He said he thought Nurmagomedov might call him out in his post-fight press conference after he beat Gaethje, but instead Nurmagomedov made an emotional speech about his father, who died last summer due to complications from Covid-19, and then announced his retirement from the sport. “It’s not good to make an emotional decision. When I train I feel very confident and I’m like, ‘Yeah bring it on’. But when I’m home like this, relaxed, I’m thinking about it. I’m more cautious, thinking about the pros and cons of everything. So I will have to analyse because my situation has changed since two years ago.” He did say hearing the news was interesting. “It freaking excites me, man.”
