After putting on a clinic against Calvin Kattar in the UFC Fight Island 7 main event on Sunday, Max Holloway floated the idea of getting the golden ticket to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov. “Khabib wanted somebody to impress him,” the former featherweight champ said, following a unanimous decision that saw 10-8 rounds galore and even one 50-42 scorecard on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. A fight between the two fell out in April 2018 but UFC president Dana White is not intending to match them up again, if the UFC lightweight champ comes out of retirement. “No, Max is at 45 [145 pounds],” White said at the post-event press conference inside the Etihad Arena. “For a long time I thought Max was a big 45 pounder, until he moved up to 55 and I said, ‘Oh s***, he‘s not as big as I thought he was.” Holloway’s only venture up to lightweight in the UFC ended in a unanimous decision defeat by Dustin Poirier, with the interim belt on the line, with “The Diamond” lighting up “Blessed” on the feet in the opening rounds. “I like him at 45, especially after tonight’s performance,” White added. UFC: Holloway calls out Khabib, throws shade at Volkanovski Nurmagomedov’s much-anticipated announcement on whether he was going to reverse his retirement did not offer a definitive answer, with “The Eagle” saying he would see if Conor McGregor or Dustin Poirier make a big statement in the UFC 257 co-main event. “Khabib is cornering on Wednesday, and then he leaves and goes to Vegas,” White said. “I will watch the fight and fly home on Sunday and I’ll see him again in Vegas. He and I are gonna go to dinner and talk again and make a decision. “The one thing he did say is, I’ll never hold up the division, whoever’s next, if I decide I don’t want to fight these guys, whoever’s next is next. He’s either gonna fight somebody or he’s gonna walk away.” "Show me something spectacular and make me want to come back and fight." @danawhite explained to @Jon_Anik what @TeamKhabib told him during their meeting, addressing the lightweights fighting at #UFC257 pic.twitter.com/oFr4TmCNI3 — ESPN MMA (@espnmma) January 16, 2021 “He wants to see everybody – he already said [Charles] Oliveira looked awesome [against Tony Ferguson], that guy looked great and felt like he deserves a shot at the title. Let’s see what everybody brings next weekend.” White confirmed, though, that 39-year-old legend Georges St-Pierre will not be in the frame. The Canadian former two-weight UFC champ had been angling for the “dream” fight since retiring for a second time in 2018, with Nurmagomedov seemingly open to the idea. “Nope, GSP never came up,” White said. “He’s [Nurmagomedov] not interested in that fight, from what I hear today after that, neither is GSP. So that’s over.”
