As Irish mixed martial arts phenom Conor “Notorious” McGregor (24-4) gets set to make his return to the Octagon for the first time in just over a year, we look at some of the more interesting facets of his life.

The 32-year-old last fought Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 246 in January of 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe. McGregor, who demolished Cerrone in 40 seconds, earning a US$30 million payday in the process, reignited mainstream interest in the UFC once again.

However, 2020 did not go as planned and McGregor, who initially said he wanted to fight three times last year, retired via a Twitter post before announcing his comeback late in 2020. He will fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 257 on Sunday, with the card kicking off at 11am, Hong Kong time.

McGregor last fought Poirier at UFC 178 in 2014, delivering a resounding “Performance of the Night” and first round TKO win, which whipped the UFC world into a frenzy. Now, McGregor looks to reestablish himself as a contender and potential lightweight belt holder, but first, how did the kid from Crumlin wind up as the UFC’s biggest star of all-time?
