Meng Bo has warned ONE Championship atomweight champ Angela Lee “that belongs to me” as she gets set to return to action on Friday night. No 2-ranked Meng (16-5) of China – the only woman to have beaten UFC strawweight champ Zhang “Magnum” Weili (21-1) – faces Brazil’s Samara Santos (11-7-1) at ONE: Unbreakable in Singapore. The 24-year-old is slated to be included in ONE’s 2021 atomweight grand prix, with the tournament’s winner to challenge “Unstoppable” Lee (10-2), who is expecting her first child in April. “I want the chance to challenge the champion as soon as possible,” Meng said at Tuesday’s virtual media day. “Right now I’m paving my way to the champion because I really want the belt. “If I can participate in the grand prix, I can showcase all my training and skill to advance, and I can prove I’ve got all the talent to challenge Angela Lee. “Truth be told, I think there is no opponent for me in my division, but I respect everyone in every fight so right now my only opponent is Angela lee, I want to get her belt, that belt belongs to me.” ONE: Aung La N Sang targets April return – ‘gonna get my belt back’ Meng is coming off an 86-second KO of Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol (7-4) in November, her second straight win since joining ONE. However, despite announcing the grand prix soon after Lee revealed she was pregnant in October, the promotion is still yet to confirm the eight fighters who will compete, nor any fight dates for the quarter finals. “I hope ONE Championship can arrange a fight between me and the No 1 rank, Denice [Zamboanga], because I believe I can defeat her easily. I hope this fight can come as soon as possible,” Meng added. “I’m going to be clear – I’m not focused on Angela Lee. My only hope and my ultimate goal is to be champion, so I only want to fight with the champion, not matter who she is. “Angela lee is really good at ground fighting but I think her stand-up is kind of weak, so she really has to improve her stand-up fighting skills.” Meng was also unimpressed by what she saw from another of her compatriots, ONE strawweight champ Xiong “The Panda” Jingnan (15-2), in her two fights against Lee. Xiong defeated Lee by fifth-round TKO to retain her strawweight belt in March 2019 in Tokyo, but Lee evened the score seven months later with a rear-naked choke 12 seconds before the final bell. “They were very spectacular fights, but I have to say they keep the same fighting style and strategy, so nothing wows me in those two fights, but I respect the two fighters,” Meng said. “I respect Xiong Jingnan very much, I really want to fight her. But right now my goal is the atomweight championship belt. If I can have that belt I want to challenge for the strawweight belt too. I think it’s a very cool thing if I can have two belts.”
